Lewis Vineyard is all exclamation points. Comic book heroes throwing punches of Bang! Zoom! Pow! Wines from this vineyard are not for the faint of heart. But, for those seeking a gorgeous and massive Cabernet, Lewis Vineyard delivers the grail. We’re honored to re-introduce the property to our 2016 Vineyard Guide.
We featured Lewis Vineyard Cabernet in 2012 and 2013 and the results were astounding. At the 2014 UnCorked, our client-only weekend of tastings, classes & mayhem, the barrel samples were showstoppers: every remaining adoption barrel was quickly snapped up. Unfortunately, when the property went up for sale in 2014, we could no longer keep it in our portfolio. Tears. Heartache. Loss. So, when offered the opportunity to work with fruit again, it was a no-brainer.
Lewis Vineyard sits on the east side of Napa Valley overlooking Lake Hennessey and Pritchard Hill at some 1200 feet above sea level. This isn’t a property where you can pop to the vines in a Prius or Telsa. Instead, one must confront inner demons by either climbing at an impossible angle on an all terrain vehicle or literally scale vertically up the hillside on hands & knees to reach the vines. Crazy.
In the best of years, the vines eek out just 2 tons per acre. We’re talking 4 and a half barrels per acre. Economically, it doesn’t make sense to grow fruit in this manner. But, Lewis Vineyard isn’t about economics. It’s about flavor. You’ve heard of the In Pursuit of Balance Movement? Lewis Vineyard kicks sand in their faces and then laughs before slamming the door. If hoping to create a wine of restraint and elegance, we apologize for wasting four paragraphs of your life. But, if seeking comic book colors of fruit and structure, contact Stu at [email protected]. You won’t be disappointed.
