Flowering in the Vineyards

After a cool winter and moderate spring, sunny skies and warmer temperatures have staked claim across the Valley. This summery foundation has moved vines into the bloom phase. Unlike many flowering plants, which rely on outside sources, like insects, for pollination, grapevines are hermaphroditic and self-pollinating. The calyptra, a protective cap, sits atop the flowers. When ready, the calyptra is shed, exposing the pistols to pollen so fertilization can occur.

It's Bud break! We celebrate the annual ritual of vines waking from their winter slumber with the release of our 2019 Vineyard Guide. A friend recently asked why we drop off the radar every year between February and April. While quiet at a traditional winery, it's anything but at The Wine Foundry. It begins with hours of tasting through the previous vintage to assess the fruit profiles and structure of each site. Then it's muddied treks to each vineyard throughout California. The conversations, stories and tastings with the growers lay the foundation for the latest iteration of the guide.
